| Bangladesh is a riverine country with a wide network of waterways criss-crossing one another like a well laid-out cobweb. Waterways transport plays a vital role in the transport sector as well as social and economic development of the country. The Ministry of Shipping encompasses within its fold shipping and port sectors which include national waterways, inland water transport, ports, ocean shipping, oversee the safety and environmental matters and the regulatory aspects of maritime shipping and maritime education. This ministry is responsible to formulate policies and plans on these subjects and facilitate the quick implementation of various projects. This ministry also cares the maintenance and expansion of viable, efficient and dependable water transportation and communication systems as the cheapest way of economic activities both rural & urban areas. |
